The North Sea Jazz Festival was created by Dutch Jazz promoter Paul Acket, who in 1976 started what would become the most prestigious Jazz festival in the world. From an initial audience of about 9000, the festival has grown into an international spectacle, with 16 stages presenting 220 acts over a period of three days and over 100,000 people in attendance held in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
In September 2010, the first edition of the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival took place on the island of Curacao in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast at the World Trade Center on Piscadera Bay. On 3 and 4 September 2010 John Legend, Simply Red, George Benson, India and Sergio Medes played the first festival. Also that year many local Jazz, Soul, World Beat and Latin artists performed. North Sea Jazz Festival also organized a festival in Cape Town from 2000 to 2004.
Now in its 9th year, the festival has been a huge sucess attracting an international line-up as well as participants from all over the world. Last year the 3 day festival welcomed around 15,000 visitors with an even larger crowd expected for this year. During the three days, the festival will cover a wide range of international artists performing at the festival grounds. In the week preceding the festival, the island will submerge itself in Jazz, Soul, Latin, Hip Hop and R & B, all with a Caribbean touch. Curacao North Sea Jazz is initiated by Fundashon Bon Intenshon. Net proceeds will be donated to charity.
Among the 2019 performing artists scheduled to appear were David Sanborn, Juan Luis Guerra, Havana D'Primera, Aymee Nuviola, Pitbull, Kenny G, Maxwell, Michael McDonald, Mariah Carey, Maroon 5, Aloe Blacc, Gladys Knight, Ozuna, Third World and many other International & local artists to be announced.
The 2019 Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival was held August 29 to 31.
