Artist Mantra

Artist Mantra - In order to live a creative life, one must overcome the fear of being wrong.
In order to live a creative life, one must overcome the fear of being wrong.

Stage fright, or performance anxiety, is typically caused by negative thoughts about one's ability to perform, especially in front of an audience. This can range from just being a bit "nervous" to the extreme affect of a rapid heartbeat and crippling muscle tension. Some level of anxiety may be common with many players, but when it interferes with the performance, it can become problematic.

"Anxiety is the hand maiden of creativity." - T S Eliot

Public speaking, studio recording, or performing on stage can be difficult for many people, however it doensn't need to stay that way. Preperation is the key to self-confidence: practice, practice, practice. Practice the material. Practice performing the material. Invite others to listen to you practicing your performance. If you have done the work and feel that you are well prepared, you can move forward with confidence.

"Nothing will stop you from being creative so effectively as the fear of making a mistake." - John Cleese

There's often a lot to learn from so-called "mistakes" in playing. Mistakes can tell us quite a bit about how we are hearing the music, what the possibilities are or what we can change to make the tune go in a different direction, especially in composition and improvisation. So do not fear mistakes, but instead use them.

"The quickest way to become troubled is to be concerned with what people say about your work." - Ahmad Jamal

While it can be flattering for listeners to give positive feedback concerning our music, true fulfilment can only come from within. That's where the honesty comes from. If you believe in your art, others will also.
