Founded in the United States in 1968 as the National Association for Jazz Education (NAJE), the organization formally changed its name to the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) in 1989 and operated as a not-for-profit corporation based in Manhattan, Kansas, USA.
The IAJE was recognized as the largest annual gathering of the global Jazz community, with upwards of 7,000 educators, musicians, record executives, exhibitors, media and enthusiasts attending from over 30 countries. At times the conference featured over 100 performances by internationally recognized artists and students on 9 fully produced venues. In addition, there were over 50 clinics, workshops, panel sessions, video and technology presentations, research paper presentations and a 40,000 square foot music industry exposition. The conferences were of interest to anyone involved in the teaching, performance, presentation, business, or appreciation of Jazz music.
Education, teacher training and networking remained firmly at the heart of the conference agenda combined with one of the strongest and most diverse performance schedules in it's combined 39 year history. Special care was given to scheduling sessions of interest to grass roots educators at all levels.
The 35th Annual IAJE Conference (its last) was held January 9 to 12, 2008 in Toronto, Canada. On Friday, April 18th, 2008 the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) ceased daily operations and filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of the United States Federal Bankruptcy Law. All future events were cancelled and the organization closed.
