Unlike scales of fixed pitch, modes are arrangements
of tones and semitones which may be played at any pitch.

Modal Jazz uses modes rather than chord progressions as the harmonic framework to compose or solo over a tune. Without the need to connect one chord to another, the player is able to deliver ideas closer to pure melody allowing unique self-expression.
