Music and all Art is an essential part of the "human experience." A basic understanding and appreciation of Music can only serve to broaden ones character and deepen the connection between ourselves and those around us. As public schools are forced to cut back their programs, the private music lesson experience will not only supplement the school, but may eventually replace it in many areas. This is especially true for Jazz education.

Located in the Ocean Beach community of San Diego (studio webcam) students receive music lessons individually planned for their age, level of experience and goals/preferences. Specific Jazz styles will be addressed including Jazz Standards, Broadway, Gospel, Classical music & the Blues. In depth piano study for Jazz theory and harmony, piano chord voicing, altered chords and substitutions, improvisation and soloing, accompaniment and comping, lead sheets and fake book study, scale and mode use, blues progressions and rhythm development. Jazz piano lessons are taught personally by pianist/composer D C DowDell.

Motivated, serious students will be accepted at all levels. Beginning students are instructed to play music from the very first lesson and continue progressing with a comprehensive method of study. Intermediate and advanced players benefit from lesson plans specifically designed to utilize their experience and strengths. Typically, students come for a 1 hour lesson, once per week. All students have unlimited free access to sheet music, manuscript paper, audio and video downloads, updates & other study materials in the Online Student Area.
